March 21, 2010 - Fifteen lasers were out on the Navesink on what can only be described as a beautiful spring day. Winds blowing at about eight to ten, were shifty as usual on the Navesink. I was able to take some video from the second deck at MBC and hopefully will have time to put something together (it just never seems to be enough time).
Congratulations to the local Lightning Winter Championship contingent down at St. Petersburg. Paul Luisi, with crew Dale Barney and Dr. Hodge finished 19th overall; MBC commodore David Watts, with crew Robert Watts and Ian Sanderson finished 24th; and George Harrington, with crew Paul Michalowski and Cole Barney finished 33rd out of 57 boats.
March 9, 2010 - Yep, there were two lightnings out on the Navesink River this past Sunday. It's the earliest I've seen them out on the river but Paul Luisi and George Harrington decided that the fifty degree weather and medium wind was a perfect opportunity to get a little preparation for their trip down to St. Petersburg for the Winter Lightning Championship in two weeks. The boats got in four races with each getting two bullets.
Meanwhile, as you can see from the video, the lightnings sailed the same course as the lasers, who finally got back out on the river after an absence of almost three months due to the weather. The lightnings looked huge out there as they maneuvered through the seven lasers. All this 'action' causes some confusion in the video as I went back and forth from the lightnings to the lasers. And, oh yeah, there were some kayakers out there as well. Bottom line - all the sailors as well as those of us who were watching had a great time! And once again, Dylan Finneran took the day in the laser fleet. Part One of the day's races can be viewed here. Hopefully, I can get part two up soon.
Hopefully, this warmer weather will stick around and we'll see more racers out next week - plus all the snow will have melted and everyone can get their lasers out.
January 10, 2010 Ice Update - They're back! The ice boaters that is. Video can be seen here.
January 7, 2010 Ice Update - The Navesink River was frozen on Wednesday but probably not thick enough for ice boating....yet. There were a few ice boats in the yard and I'm sure more will be arriving this week. I hear the hope is that there will be racing this weekend especially since we're expecting an arctic blast on Friday with some snow but probably not enough to affect racing. Two River Sailing will be doing video if there is any 'action' on the Navesink. There are more photos that I took on Wednesday here. And if you want to get in the mood for ice boating, check out the Ice Boating 2009 video from last winter on the video page.
By the way, Laser Fleet 9 Captain David Watts, asks that all lasers be removed from the Monmouth Boat Club yard to make room for the ice boats.
January 3, 2010 - It's cold. It's windy. And the Navesink is deciding whether or not it is going to freeze over. Right now, the report is that the river is frozen about half way out from the boat club. So, for now there's no laser or N10 racing but there may be ice boating if this weather keeps up. Stay tuned.
The annual New Year's Day Laser Regatta was cancelled due to partial freezing on the Navesink River. Remember the good old days when nothing could stop the laser sailors from going out on the Navesink? Check this out from January 27, 2007.

Lightning Atlantic Coast Championship - Approximately sixty boats participated in the event that took place at the Toms River Yacht Club on July 25-26. Many thanks to the Bailey family for loaning us their whaler. Read more about the regatta.

Are you left or right brain dominant? Is the dancer turning clockwise or counter clockwise? How you 'see' her supposedly indicates which side of your brain is the more dominant side. I'm right side dominant but if I concentrate enough, I can 'see' her spin in the other direction. The Right Versus the Left Brain Test
